SEVENTY years ago on June 6, 1944 (and only thirty years after the outbreak of the First World War which we commemorate this summer), the Allies landed more than 150,000 troops in Normany. There were twelve thousand casualties on the first day with 4,414 confirmed dead and it was the turning point of the Second World War in Europe on the western front. We owe a great deal to the memory of those who sacrificed so much. Many who survived called on SSAFA for help over the following years; from the war widow facing hardship to an elderly veteran needing housing adaptations, as we have provided support to anyone who has ever served in our Armed Forces, and their families, since 1885 through two World Wars down to today. In honour of those who took part in D-Day, SSAFA is part of the UK's largest commemorative concert at the Royal Albert Hall tomorrow (Friday). The BBC is presenting a special Radio 2, 'Friday Night is Music Night Presents D-Day 70 Years On', with proceeds to SSAFA, The Royal British Legion and SkillForce UK. Tickets for London are sold out, but the concert will be streamed live to 180 cinemas across the UK, with Plymouth and Okehampton lucky to be among the locations. The live cinema broadcast will allow veterans, their families and others to embrace the event visually and mark the 70th anniversary of D-Day together. Tickets can be bought at the cinemas (Vue Plymouth and New Carlton Okehampton) or by visiting the BBC Radio 2 website at http://ddayconcert.com/">http://ddayconcert.com/ It is worth remembering at this time that SSAFA is here for all those who serve, or have served, in our Armed Forces, regardless of conflict. The network of trained volunteers, including our West Devon Branch, work locally to make sure that help is always close at hand. If you would like to find out more about the help we offer or become a volunteer for SSAFA, please call Exeter 01392-254611. Alan Johnson Divisional Secretary SSAFA West Devon
