MEL Stride, MP for Central Devon, came to the Ockment Centre, Okehampton, on June 10 in order to tell us all about his first year in parliament and to answer questions put to him.

He was very willing to answer questions concerning the NHS, care of the elderly, a possible badger cull, council tax, youth services etc.

He was less keen to answer a question about a referendum on our membership of the European Union.

It was stated that it was on record that he had said 'no' to a referendum. He claimed that he was in favour on principle, but the time was not right.

In a recent letter to the Okehamton Times, Bryan Gillard mentioned our costly membership of the British Union. What about our costly membership of the EU?

A great deal of taxpayers' money is wasted in Europe but most members of parliament do not choose to draw attention to this.
