FIRE and rescue service crews were sent to tackle a huge blaze in a barn at Tor Royal near Princetown on Sunday evening.

The three crews from Princetown, Yelverton and Tavistock found the 30-metre by 40-metre barn, housing a tractor, hay and straw, well alight and firefighters initially feared that ten tonnes of fertiliser were at risk of becoming involved in the blaze.

An additional three pumps, the water bowser along with an incident command unit and the environment unit from Ivybridge were called to assist.

Crews had the blaze under control just over eight hours after their arrival.

Around 25% of the barn roof was damaged by the fire, one tele-handler was severely damaged, approximately 100 bales of hay were destroyed and six bags of fertiliser, items of agricultural machinery and a tractor were also damaged by the fire.

No livestock was lost as all the cattle which had been in and around the barn were able to be taken to safety.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and fire investigation is to take place.
