AT THE Chagford Cricket Club annual awards, former Gloucestershire player Jack Davey was the guest speaker, and he went on to present the awards to the players.
The first team batting award went to 15 year-old Billy Searle, who played in all 18 Devon League games, scoring 346 runs and demonstrated his all round ability by taking 31 wickets. This is even more remarkable as the previous season, as a 14 year old, he had topped the batting average for the second team. Billy has also toured South Africa with the county side as well as playing many representative games.
The bowling award for the first team went to former Devon county player Jerry Christophers, taking 34 wickets at a cost of 17.29 — as well as scoring useful runs and seldom making a mistake in the field.
The batting award for the second team went to Peter Holland in his first season with the club, scoring 412 runs at an average of 45.7.
For the second consecutive season veteran Steve Sizmur picked up the Second Team Bowling award with 18 wickets at 14.89, and Steve was in such good form that he was called into action with the first team, otherwise he would no doubt have doubled the wickets taken.
The president's award went to Jules Baker, for his comitment to the club.
In making a special award to scorer Ruth Penberthy, for taking over scoring duties to the first team due to illness of regular scorer Eileen Sothern, tributes were paid to the Penberthy and Sizmur families who have contributed much to the smooth running of the club.
Club chairman Bryce Rundle reported that the first team after several sucessful seasons had been relegated from the B Division of the Devon League but hoped for a successful season in 2012.
The second team after promotion the previous year, had cemented their place by finishing sixth.
Bryce was pleased that Del Lammonby had agreed again to skipper the firsts in the new season and that all rounder Gary Sizmur had accepted the position of vice captain. Simon Snell is again to be captain of the second team with Steve Sizmur as Vice Captain.
Bryce was pleased that the Restored Youth Coaching had been successful under Chris Mount and had been well supported by players and parents.
The club look forward to next season where there are two teams in the Devon Cricket League, as well as a full programme of friendly matches.
Chagford has entered a six-a-side team in the Okehampton Indoor League.
New players of whatever ability are welcome. Anyone interested in joining the club should contact Steve Sizmur on 01837 55960 or Gary Sizmur on 07891 814549.
