HONESTY really is the best policy for one happy couple, who are celebrating a very special day together.

Gerald and Florence Rose will be spending the day at home when they mark their 60th anniversary today (Thursday).

Born in Okehampton, Florence was the youngest daughter of 13 children.

At 17, she moved to London where she met Gerald at the Hammersmith Palais in London — it was there the couple went on their first date and they never looked back.

Gerald and Florence married at Chelsea Register Office in 1949 and spent their honeymoon in Okehampton.

Gerald said: 'I wouldn't part with her for the world. I have not been out with anyone else — although I can only speak for myself!

'The key to a lasting marriage is honesty. You have to be honest with each other — and never have an argument overnight.'

Gerald, who was born in Bombay in India, passed his apprenticeships in Bombay dockyard and spent five years in every trade, six months in each one, until he became a draftsman.

He then came to England where he worked his way up to be a chief draughtsman, estimator and designer, while Florence worked in Hammersmith Town Hall.

The couple lived in London for 38 years before moving to Okehampton in 1976, when they bought the Ockment Hotel and Restaurant.

Both spent many years as active members of the Cancer Research branch in the town, of which Gerald was chairman and also president of Okehampton Rotary Club twice. The Rotary Club used to hold their meeting at the Ockment Hotel.

The couple now live in Exmouth.
