OKEHAMPTON and District Community Transport Group is still on the lookout for a volunteer driver on Saturdays, having now been without one for several months. The group requires a suitably qualified driver for its ring and ride 15 seater bus for its Saturday Passenger Club day trips — a Devon County Council badge holder would be preferred. The position is paid. The driver would require a wheelchair and tail lift certificate, or training can be arranged. There is flexibility on dates as trips can be booked to suit driver availability. The group has been searching for a driver since February, and is getting more and more desperate to fill the position as it struggles to complete the day trips with more smaller vehicles. Sue Wonnacott, the group co-ordinator, said: 'Since the spring, we have unfortunately struggled to find volunteer drivers to take our users in our smaller vehicle on a regular basis. So our clients are continually being disappointed at having to miss out on their outings which they really look forward to. 'We hate disappointing anyone, particularly as these trips improve the quality of life for people who don't have access to other means of transport or family members who can take them for a day out.' The group is also looking for other volunteer drivers to cover holiday and sick leave. The transport group pays its drivers 45p per mile and also indemnifies no claims bonuses and policy excesses. Volunteers can spare as much time as they like, from a couple of hours a month upward. Drivers with relevant experience can also volunteer to drive the wheelchair accessible vehicle on trips.
