AFTER only having two pupils join Spreyton Primary School in September, the school is holding an open afternoon to encourage parents to consider the school an option for their children next year to ensure its long-term survival.

As the second smallest school in Devon, Spreyton Primary only had two new reception students starting in the autumn term. In 2015 it had five.

Headteacher Martin Marriott said: ‘We currently have 22 pupils at the school.

‘The school is financially stable for the next two to three years and we hope to be able to open up a pre-school in the future.

‘However, to only take on two new pupils each September simply isn’t sustainable in the long-term. The school is such a vital part of the community, we want to boost the number of pupils joining the school to ensure its survival long-term.’

Mr Marriott said a pre-school would also make the school more viable.

Next Tuesday (November 8) the school is welcoming parents and children to an open afternoon.
