A FOSTERING agency based in the South West is urging those affected by the closure of the PoleStar factory to consider fostering as an alternative career route.

Independent fostering agency Pathway Care is holding an informal open evening at the White Hart Hotel in Okehampton on Thursday February 16 to provide more information on how fostering can be a viable and rewarding career for those facing redundancy and unemployment.

There is currently a shortage of 8,100 foster carers in the UK and more than 600 in the South West alone. Pathway Care has identified Devon as an area with a particular shortage.

Martin Leitch at Pathway Care, said: 'Over 300 people in the Okehampton area will be affected by the closure of PoleStar food factory and for many finding new employment or an alternative career will be extremely daunting.

'We are offering those affected an alternative route, and would urge them to attend our information evening to find out more about fostering as a career choice.

'We are looking for people from all walks of life from single people to couples and older people and unlike many preconceptions, no experience of fostering is necessary as full training and ongoing support will be provided.'

The foster care recruitment open evening is at the White Hart Hotel from 4pm until 7pm.
