SEVEN schools from the Okehampton area took part in an exciting day of inter-school competition at North Tawton Community Primary School. The whole day had a positive emphasis focussing on fair play.
Two competitions took place, the seven-a-side football tournament and the high – five netball tournament. The first award — a silver cup — with medals for the winners, was a perennial award for the team with the highest points awarded throughout the day.
This year, it was Okehampton Primary School who won the football tournament in the last game. South Tawton came second and North Tawton third in a close finish.
The netball tournament was so close that two teams ended up sharing the trophy, with South Tawton and North Tawton holding the cup for six months each. Such was the element of fair play that children ended up cheering each other's teams! Bridestowe football and netball teams deserved to win this year's fair play award.
Headteacher of North Tawton School, Nick D'Agorne, said: 'This is one time of year that I really enjoy as it is an opportunity for us to fully utilise our wonderful school grounds to the benefit of all the local schools in the Okehampton Learning Community, in a friendly competition.
'All the children thoroughly enjoyed the day. It was also a relaxing, enjoyable day for the parents and teachers, especially those watching the football teams as we were grateful to have the support of three students from Okehampton College, who volunteered to referee the matches.'
