A PIONEERING project to gain Fairtrade status for Okehampton got off to a good start with a packed hall full of people looking to support the campaign.

The meeting, held at All Saints Church Hall, began with organisers reading out letters of support from those who were unable to attend.

There was also a talk of the goals which the town hopes to achieve to attain Fairtrade status.

The campaign aims to ensure at least two Fairtrade products become available in the town's retail outlets, cafés, restaurants and pubs.

The project also needs workplaces, schools, churches and community organisations to support its Fairtrade status campaign.

Member of the Fairtrade Status project, Kate Thompson expressed thanks to all those who attended the meeting.

She said: 'It was greatly appreciated that the primary school was represented by a member of staff who expressed a personal interest in the subject, as well as enthusiasm for working with children on the issues.

'Okehampton College was represented by one former and one current student who stated that Fairtrade juice had been available at the college for some time and that the Fairtrade movement was something discussed by staff and students.'

Members at the meeting have volunteered to take action to distribute information and speak to local traders.

West Devon Borough Councillor Christine Marsh said: 'I am fully supportive of Okehampton gaining Fairtrade status.

'It is definitely something we will be looking into at our next meeting.

'At the end of the day it's all about getting behind and supporting the Third World countries, and I see no reason why we can't.'

l A follow-up meeting will be held on Monday, October 12 and the venue will be confirmed at a later date.
