YOU carried a letter (October 4) voicing concerns over changes to the way Devon County Council deliver and install mobility equipment.

Could I clarify that using independent retailers for this role is not new; in fact, here at Oakhouse Foods we have been members of the scheme for over a year, during which time we have delivered and installed hundreds of items for clients, in close liaison with their occupational therapists.

The only new element is the simple fitting of grab rails, with more complex jobs still being referred to a specialist team.

To say the work will be carried out by 'people who have no knowledge of fitting such items' is simply not the case. Any retailers who provide the service must first be inspected, trained and accredited by Devon County Council.

As the owner of a business employing 20 people from the local area, I am delighted with any government initiative that allows us to provide services from here in Tavistock, that would have previously been dealt with from Plymouth or Exeter.
