FOR MANY years the Union flag and flag of St George have fluttered proudly above the church tower of St John the Baptist in Hatherleigh.

But in recent years the flags have become old and worn, and a charity quiz is to be held to raise funds to purchase new flags for the iconic building.

The quiz will be at the Tally Ho! on Sunday January 30, starting at 7.30pm. Teams of four can enter for £2 per head.

Jane Payne, potter at Hatherleigh Pottery, said: 'The idea is to raise money for the flags as a community, rather than asking the church to do it, as they're currently battling to raise funds to restore the church tower.'
