STUDENTS from Shebbear College learned about international politics as they attended the annual Model United Nations Conference recently.
Held at Queen's College Taunton, the conference was attended by over 250 students from 13 different schools and simulates the real United Nations in terms of structure, organisation and discussion. It develops a range of skills and provides an insight into the world of diplomacy and international politics.
The school represented Syria, Azerbaijan, Ireland and Nigeria. The day began with Taunton Deane's local MP, Jeremy Browne, talking to the students about the importance of having a viewpoint on politics today and how, in the future, the students could make a difference to important decisions being made.
Throughout the day students had to prove their skills in debating, quick thinking and knowledge on their chosen countries.
Emilio Alberti, who was part of the team representing Syria, won the prize of commended delegate for his contribution throughout the day.
Sixth form student Sean Clark said: 'The Model United Nations is a great way for students to learn about current world affairs from the point of view of many different countries.
'Additionally, it is very beneficial for each participant, as it teaches them the skills they will need in later life.
'For example, the art of debating and presenting clauses to crowds reaching over one hundred people, which some delegates such as Nour Gobara and Emilio Alberti did this year.'
