A public footpath at Meldon Reservoir will close today (Thursday) due to a disagreement over access agreements.
The path, that offers picturesque views overlooking the reservoir, is a local tourist attraction and place of natural beauty.
In 2009, Dartmoor National Park Authority recorded around 15,000 visitors to the footpath. The walks around the reservoir offer an insight into bygone life, with the viaduct and limestone quarry particular points of interest.
Andrew Watson, principal access and recreation officer for Dartmoor National Park Authority, said: 'In 2007, the National Park Authority reviewed access payments to landowners.
'As the current agreement comes to an end, the landowner decided to decline the new offer made to them.'
The National Park Authority is hopeful that the closure of the path does not have a knock-on effect on local tourism. Kay Bickley, owner of Upcott House Bed and Breakfast, was disappointed with the news.
She said: 'A very good proportion of our guests are keen walkers, and we always promote it as a beautiful local walk.
'It's greatly loved and well used by locals. If people were prevented to use the path, it would be a great shame.'
While the immediate plan is for the footpath to close, Mr Watson remained positive: 'The door's open. Negotiations are still ongoing, and the path might re-open in the future.'
