DECLARED 'the best ever' by many people, Monkokehampton's Village Fun Day drew more visitors than ever on a day that, thankfully, remained dry.
The main aim of the event is simply for both children and adults to have fun, and to meet and mingle with friends and neighbours. Organisers were delighted to see just how many children were there this year.
After the races the new tug of war event was introduced, with hilarious results as chilldren of all ages formed themselves into mixed ability teams, aided by the odd grown-up.
Dads and granddads, sons and daughters joined in with scant regard for the rules, and most ended up on the ground, providing much entertainment for their supporters.
Skittles and welly-wanging provided an opportunity for competitive souls, while the chance to sit and chat came with the cream teas, bar, and barbecue.
The duck race under the experienced eye of John Pearce was won by Geoffrey Murrin and Peter Fishleigh; the ladies cake competition winner was Mary Risdon and the men's chocolate cake competition was won by James Pearce. The children's competition for an animal made from fruit and vegetables was won by Jessica Lewis (five and under) and James Pearce (ages six to ten). The winner of the scarecrow competition with her festival-going 'Monkstock' entry was Becky Risdon.
The organisers would like to thank everyone who supported the event and helped make it such a success. About £900 was raised and this will go towards the maintenance of the Old School Room.
