A CHARITY motorcycle ride recreating a journey from 60 years ago will pass through Okehampton later this year.
On October 6 1953, managing director of Triumph Motorcycles Edward Turner set out, with works director Bob Fearon and service manager Alec Masters, to ride from Lands' End to John O'Groats on Triumph Terriers, the latest 150cc bike from the company.
They covered the trip in five days, getting 108 miles to the gallon with an average speed of 36mph.
A group of riders from England, Scotland and Belgium, known as the Gaffers' Gallop, will recreate the trip, starting from Roche on Sunday, October 6, heading south to Land's End and returning to Exeter for the night. The ride will see them pass through Lifton, Bridestowe, Meldon and Okehampton on the first day of their trip.
