THE Okehampton Music Centre’s project, which offers children the chance to take part in a scheme that aims to remove the financial barriers associated with learning an instrument, is due to start again in 2016.
The music centre was able to run the project for the first time in autumn 2014, thanks to funding from Okehampton United Charity, Devon Music Education Hub and the Okehampton Learning Community, which allowed the centre to offer high quality teaching while keeping costs manageable.
Beginning with an exciting visit from Julian Lloyd Webber last year, the project has given more than 100 children the opportunity to learn an instrument during 2015.
As well as teaching new musical skills, the music centre provides a friendly environment to meet new friends and younger pupils benefit from becoming familiar with Okehampton College.
The music centre would like to hear from children and young people in school years 3 to 9 who are interested in music.
Applications for places at the music centre in January 2016 are currently being processed and fantastic opportunities exist for pupils to learn instruments, sing in a choir and develop orchestral skills.
There are also opportunities for older pupils and parents to help out.
The music centre meets on Thursdays after school at Okehampton College with lessons taught by college staff and private instrumental teachers.
The project is co-ordinated by Community Links SW CIC, a social enterprise that helps young families. For further information contact Heather Parks at [email protected]

Applications for the last 20 places close on Wednesday, December 2.
