GREEN fingered pupils at Okehampton Primary School are celebrating after scooping a top prize in a fruit and vegetable growing competition.

The pupils, who competed against ten other schools from across the country, grew a variety of vegetables over a nine-month period, including peas, parsnips, carrots and cress, and were rewarded with £1,500 cash and £500 of gardening gift vouchers from competition organisers Persimmon Homes.

Hazel Fox, headteacher at Okehampton Primary School, said: 'We are thrilled to have won the competition and to have been rewarded with the money and vouchers, which will help us improve the school garden no end

'All of the children thoroughly enjoyed getting their hands dirty and learning how to grow their own vegetables, which has encouraged them to become more aware of their diet as well as where vegetables come from.

The school recently triumphed in another competition for green fingered children, organised by Devon County Council in association with Viridor Waste and the Somerset Waste Action Programme.
