Hatherleigh Shooting Club commemorated its founder Barry Vincent Downton, who recently passed away, at its December gathering.

The group carried out a 21-gun salute in his memory with the last two shots containing Barry’s ashes.

The gathering also saw the unveiling of a plaque in honour of Barry which is now fixed to the wall of the Duke of York pub in Iddesleigh, where the shooting club regularly meets.

Barry founded the club in 1996 when he discovered there was no local shooting club near his home just outside Iddeleigh.

Shooting club secretary Liz Kershaw described Barry as ’marvellous’.
