WHEELED contraptions in every shape and size will be heading through South Zeal and Sticklepath on Sunday (October 3) for the annual pram race.

The event, which raises money for local causes, involves people being as creative and wacky as possible — as long as the construction has wheels on it, it can take part.

As well as a constructor's prize there is also a prize for the best fancy dress.

The starting point is Reddaways Yard at South Zeal at 11.15am and the finishing point, following a three-mile circuit around the villages, is the Devonshire Inn at Sticklepath.

Last year the funds collected at the event went to the Okehampton Girl Guides, Sticklepath Parish Council for the playing field and the Rainbow Brownies.

Organiser Paul Warne said that in the past there had been everything from national park LandRover-style prams to coffins on wheels with people dressed in their pyjamas sitting inside.

'It's a good fun event and we stop in the pubs on the way around where people can have a drink if they want,' he said.

'People have to be 18 to take part but there is no upper age limit.'

As yet there has been no-one arrested for being drunk in charge of a pram!
