CHILDREN at Okehampton Primary are testing their grey matter — thanks to a generous donation from a local hotel.

The Manor House Hotel has donated £200 to the school to help set up a new chess club. The money has been used to buy twelve new chess sets, and draughts sets for younger children at the school.

Youngsters from the club competed in a chess tournament at North Tawton, each playing six games throughout the day.

The money comes from the hotel's charity fund, which is used to support schools, youth groups and sporting projects for youngsters in the area.

Guests and members of staff can contribute to the fund, which is then match funded by the hotel itself. Overall, the scheme has raised £100,000 for local projects.

Sally Huxen, Key Stage 2 assistant head, said: 'It is very kind of the Manor House Hotel to support us like this, and we are very grateful for their donation.

The children love chess — if it is nice weather they even take the chess sets outside to use in the playground. It is great to see them so enthusiastic.'

The hotel is always looking for new projects to support through their fund.
