I HAVE read with interest the West Devon Borough Council responses to comments raised by the Okehampton Town Council, Okehampton Hamlets and Parish Council and communities of Okehampton to the WDBC Our Plan proposals. I am dismayed by the apparent disregard by the WDBC Planning Department, based in Tavistock, to the comments provided on their plan by the Okehampton communities. For ten of the 27 areas, WDBC has decided not to develop some areas of Okehampton which our community have agreed as being suitable for development and have decided to develop some areas of Okehampton which our community has said are not suitable for development. This includes ignoring the WDBC Local Development Framework Core Strategy Development Plan (2006 — 2026) adopted 19 April 2011 and approved by the Government Inspector which listed areas to be developed. An example of a response from the WDBC to one area of Okehampton: 'Okehampton Hamlets Parish Council is concerned about the increase in traffic onto Exeter Road in close proximity to the entrance to the Industrial Estate and as such do not consider this site suitable for development. Okehampton Town Council considers it is important to maintain a green buffer between the town and A30 and this site should not be considered for development.' Yet WDBC in Tavistock have ruled in favour of the landowner who unsurprisingly is is favour of selling his land for development!: 'The agent on behalf of the landowner welcomes the assessment findings and considers this site is a natural continuation of the existing built development.' It is clear that WDBC regards the view of the landowner as being more important than that of the Okehampton Town Council, Okehampton Hamlets and Parish Council and communities of Okehampton! In the WDBC Our Plan latest newsletter, WDBC states 'The decision on where to build the 100 homes should be left with local community in the Neighbourhood Planning Groups'. There is no guarantee WDBC will take any notice of the decisions made by the local neighbourhood planning groups on future developments as it has apparently ignored the comments of the Okehampton communities to the WDBC Our Plan proposal. My concern is our town development continues to be governed by people outside of Okehampton without taking into consideration the community's wishes. Andy Elliott Okehampton
