Yelverton rang to the sound of hundreds of children enjoying a range of sports, games and other activities at a mass summer holiday fun day for young families.
A tractor trailer full of cheering youngsters toured the old airfield as others balanced on a tricky rope bridge and were on target at the archery and golf ranges amid many attractions at Yelverton Rotary Club’s Family Fun Day on Wednesday, July 5.
Everywhere mums and dads and their children tried out new activities and learned about a range of subjects, such as farming with Roborough Young Farmers, wildlife with Devon Wildlife Trust, and even ocean life with the Sharks Trust.
Inside one marquee, children of all ages tackled a colourful cascade of Lego blocks to stretch their imagination, thanks to the Horrabridge Love Your Neighbour community group.
Group organiser methodist community worker Ali Mansfield said: “We’ve been inundated with mums and dads and their happy children. It’s amazing how the old-fashioned basic games still grip their imagination.”
Mum Holly came from Plymouth with a friend and children Alfie, nine, Harriet, three, Harper, seven, and Darcy, seven.
“It’s a really good event and there’s nothing like it where we are,” she said. “The children still like Lego, even with everything on screens now.”
Maisie, five, tried out a euphonium at the Tavistock Stannary Brass Band stand. Her mum Cat said: “Maisie wants to learn the violin and has a little toy guitar which she plays for performances with her sister.”
Robyn, ten, came face-to-face with the sharpest teeth in the ocean on the Sharks Trust stand.
Her grandmother said: “Robyn likes birds and so sharks are quite different for her to learn about, but she’s very interested. I think it’s a wonderful event today. We came for a picnic on the airfield and were surprised to find this big event and will look out for it next year.”
