STUDENTS from various schools across the South West, including one from Okehampton, participated in the INSPIRE contemporary dance event at The Plough Arts Centre, Great Torrington recently.

Rosie Tame of Okehampton College joined the other year 10 students on the work experience placement, as they formed their own dance company and created an entire new piece in the space of five days. With the help of young choreographer, Luke Savage, who recently graduated from LABAN in London, the students performed a slick act about knife crime in modern Britain.

The topical piece was fittingly named SOS and contained dark yet cool, streetwise moves that had been created over the course of the week.

Luke said: 'Once a series of dance sections had been formulated, we worked at layering the sections with different newspaper articles, costume and sound scores to generate a theme for the piece.'

One student, Joe Munday, said: 'There's nothing quite like it, while the rest of the country's year 10 pupils are busy bashing out cups of tea in an accountancy office, I'm here, working on an awesome dance.'
