THERE's an opportunity to join members of Okehampton Rotary Club for a 14.5 mile hike across Dartmoor this Saturday, in aid of the Devon Air Ambulance and North Dartmoor Search and Rescue.

The start point will be Okehampton Youth Hostel, walking over the high moor to YHA at Bellever.

Rotary chairman Alan Roberton said: 'Living on the edge of Dartmoor, we are aware of its attractions to visitors and to the service provided by Devon Air Ambulance in getting people out of difficulties.

'The service is excellent and essential but expensive to run and as an active fundraiser, the rotary club of Okehampton would like to raise funds for the continued and vital service.'

This is said to be one of the finest and most alluring wildernesses along Dartmoor's North Moor. An enjoyable and rewarding walk, all on paths and tracks so the mist does not pose too much of a navigational issue— safety will be provided by North Dartmoor Search and Rescue.

The walk is for teams of four to six members. Individuals who want to participate can enter and will be assigned to teams. There will be three check points en route. All teams will be given target times for each section of the walk and checked in and out at each checkpoint and at the finish. On arrival at the finish participants will be transported by road to the start point.

The start time is 8am and the entry fee is £11.

Caroline Creer, Fundraising Director of Devon Air Ambulance Trust said: 'Thank you to the Rotary Club of Okehampton for supporting the charity, which is very much appreciated.  Walking across Dartmoor really does show what a remote, but beautiful county we live in.  This is where essential charity funded services such as ourselves and North Dartmoor Search and Rescue really make a huge difference.'
