SIX Okehampton College students recently completed an expedition in the Lake District as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Open Award.
Aby Simpson, Rachel Laidlaw, Yeen Wichaisri, Rachael Piddington, Ann Web and Millie Wood completed numerous walks and camping trips on Dartmoor gaining their Duke of Edinburgh grades, but decided for a change of scenery on the gold expedition.
The team planned the four day expedition, making comparisons between the Lake District and Dartmoor, noting the differences in terrain, tourism and agriculture.
Each day the team walked or carried out activities for at least eight hours, carrying their kit and food for the trip.
They covered around 60 kilometres, climbing the mountains Haystacks and Helvellyn.
Supervisors Rob Ewen and Steve Bolt were pleased with the team's effort. Rob said: 'It is what the participants learn about themselves and how to handle situations that make the Duke of Edinburgh scheme so important.'
The team will give a presentation at Okehampton College in early October.
Anyone interested in taking part in the scheme should contact Mr Wilson or Mr Blowey at the college.
