AN Okehampton woman is stepping out in pink to raise money in the nation's largest women-only fundraising event.

Margaret Woolacott will take part in the 5km Race for Life in Plymouth as part of the national effort to beat cancer.

Mrs Woolacott, who is chairman of the Okehampton branch of the Senior Council for Devon, said: 'There are Races for Life in aid of Cancer Research UK on different days across the country — I've chosen Plymouth because it's flatter ground there!

'It's all about supporting a worthwhile cause and helping in the race to find a cure for cancer, rather than being first past the post.'

Mrs Wollacott, who will be clad in the event's traditional pink colours, said training had involved a lot of walking — a popular pastime of hers.

'I know someone from Tavistock who is doing the event as well and it would be nice to go around with someone — as long as they don't go faster than me!'

Mrs Woolacott, who has lived in Okehampton all her life, said she wanted to take part in something that would make a difference.

'I did a sponsored cycle in the gym once, but I have never done anything like this before.

'Everybody seems to know someone who has been touched by cancer and I thought, I'm pretty fit for my age and I'd like to try and raise a bit of money for people who are more unfortunate than myself.'

Mrs Woolacott expressed thanks for all the support she has received: 'I've had a lot of support from family and friends, including the Okehampton Community Heartlands Forum, who have sponsored me.

'West Okement Friends and Neighbours' Association also held a draw and raised £42, and the Okehampton branch of the Senior Council for Devon have been very supportive in setting up a website for me.

'Who knows, I may do another one, but we'll have to wait and see what my feet feel like!'

The Plymouth Race for Life takes place on Sunday, June 20.
