The findings of the latest Destination Okehampton SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) meeting have been revealed.

The group was set up in October 2009 in an effort to market the town to both tourists and businesses.

The scope of the group has grown since then to take into account societal issues that affect the town in an effort to make Okehampton a more attractive place to live, work and visit.

The latest meeting focused on the town's tourism and leisure prospects and its infrastructure.

In discussion, the two subjects became intertwined. The desire to improve the town's roads, provide a passenger train service to Exeter and better travel links to Exeter Airport were felt as important to the town's tourism prospects as they were to its infrastructure.

Marketing the town in the correct manner was also seen as vital to boost visitor numbers. Focusing tourism marketing of the town on the myriad of activity opportunities offered by the local cycle paths and moorland was something members felt could be improved.

The group discussed various ways to go about marketing the town including the use of social networking websites, the Dartmoor Partnership, and tourism sites such as TripAdvisor and VisitDevon.

The group's next meeting takes place in the town hall's council chamber on Monday January 23 at 7pm to carry out a SWOT analysis on the community and population, and business. All are welcome to share their views and help shape the group's objectives.
