A FIRE crew were called to reports of a car on fire at the Square in North Tawton soon after 2pm on Friday.

The crew from North Tawton confirmed one car was well alight and severely damaged by fire in the car park. The vehicle was extinguished using two breathing apparatus wearers and one hose reel jet.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.

Crews were also called to attend a number of chimney fires over the last few days.

One chimney fire took place at Brittanshaye, Clovelly Raod in Northlew at 7.30pm on Saturday. The crew used chimney gear and a thermal imaging camera on the wood burning stove to extinguish the fire.

Another chimney was on fire at Pontersina, Park Road in Hatherleigh. Again crews used chimney gear to extinguish the fire.

The fire service received a call from a member of public just after 10am on Monday, requesting attendance to a small grass fire. Crews from Okehampton attended and on arrival called for a further appliance for fire personnel due to the size of the fire.

The fire consisted of gorse and grass and covered approximately 50 square meters. nearly two hours later another appliance was requested to attend the incident for water as the fire had spread to 300 meters. The crews extinguished the fire using hose reel jets, beaters and a water shuttle from open water using a main jet.
