RECENTLY it was my privilege and indeed pleasure, to attend a former players' reunion held at Okehampton Rugby Football Club.

Held as part of the 125-year celebrations it resulted in a special occasion, proving (if ever proof was required) the sheer value of participating in sport. Members came from far and wide to resume friendships of long standing.

Held against the magnificent backdrop of Dartmoor (who was in her most benevolent mood) the sun shone gloriously throughout the day.

A superb buffet prepared by the club ladies helped to set the scene for an occasion to remember. People attending ranged from the team of 1946 up until the present day. All united in a love of sport and the company of those who value the benefits which come from it.

Amongst which discipline, respect, loyalty and comradeship figure highly, all of which serve to shape character. Sadly, sport is now not regarded quite as importantly as it once was in the schools, but never has the need been greater.

Consequently, local clubs are left to encourage participation, often creating a financial burden. Nevertheless there is ample proof positive that participating in sport brings well being into people's lives and into the community as a whole.

Believe me, I know this to be true.
