ADULTS with mental health problems have a new peer support group running at the Ockment Centre in Okehampton.
At the group’s meeting on July 26, members welcomed Karen Percival from Okehampton United Charities, who provided funding for the group.
The group members asked Karen to express thanks to the trustees of the charity for enabling them to have this much needed drop-in group by providing funding for the coming year.
Jackie Day, who is helping to establish and co-ordinate the group, commented on how easy the charity had made the application process, and how quickly it had responded to the initial enquiry about funding.
Thanks were also expressed for the help, advice and ongoing support given by the West Devon Community Volunteer Service.
As group members experience various mental health issues, they understand the need for mutual support and a warm welcome to new members is assured.
As it is a drop-in group there is no obligation to turn up every week and there’s no pressure to join in with the various activities and discussions.
Activities and discussions include mindfulness, music and general knowledge quizzes, craft activities plus guest speakers.
The members would welcome more volunteers who are able to give an hour or two of their time to help support the group; in particular the group would like to hear from anyone who has experience in the field of mental health.
The Okehampton Peer Support Group meets every Wednesday, from 1pm until 3pm.
Just call into the Ockment Centre and ask at reception for the peer support group.
There is a phone for text or voicemail messages on 07955 848935.
