A LONG-TERM project to install new windows at the Ockment Centre has finally been completed.
The windows to the rear of the centre have been replaced to the tune of £47,560. The work will help to massively reduce the centre’s heating bills and overall running costs.
The centre had funding in place last year to replace the windows, but their initial planning permission was refused and so the original funding was withdrawn.
Carol Ward, the Ockment Centre manager, said: ‘Our old windows were dangerous with thin glass, difficult to open and almost impossible to close. With the windows being so old they were single glazed and our heating bills were astronomical.
‘In June last year we were given hope that if we reapplied for planning, we might get it. All the drawings had to be changed to comply and Okehampton Glass — not even knowing that they would get the job — got involved with the planners to draw up what they wanted.
‘We got the planning permission for replacement windows at the rear and secondary glazing at the front of the property. We started to apply for funding and we were very lucky in getting the full amount.’
Carol expressed thanks to funders Okehampton United Charities, Viridor Credits, The Norman Family Trust, The Co-op Community Fund, private donors from the community and staff and local people for their fundraising support.
Carol said the Ockment Centre team were especially grateful to all of their customers who have been understanding during the fitting of the windows.
