WORK to transform the old Castle Hospital site in Okehampton into modern flats for older people is off to a good start, with the development set to open in the summer.

The project, estimated to cost around £7-million, will provide facilities for older people with care needs, offering on-site care and support services to allow residents to receive as much or as little care and support as they need.

The partnerships responsible for the development include Devon County Council, West Devon Borough Council, the Guinness Trust and the Home and Communities Agency.

Chairman of West Devon Borough Council's future planning and housing committee Cllr Diana Moyse said: 'We have worked extremely hard to improve housing opportunities for the elderly and it is a main priority for the council.

'This development will meet so many different needs for our residents and we are delighted that it is on track for completion next summer.'

The hospital will be converted into 33 one bed and 17 two bed self-contained rented flats, each equipped with telecare technologies to support people with care needs, along with wheelchair access and level access showers.

Okehampton County Cllr Christine Marsh said: 'I have been working on this development for the past four years.

'It is so lovely to finally see it being built and transformed into much needed and appreciated homes. The development will make such a difference to residents who will live and stay at the old Castle Hospital.'

Devon County Council's executive member for adult and community services Cllr Hugo Barton said: 'This will be a housing scheme for life, where people will live at home rather than in a home.'

Cllr Barton said the 24-hour available on-site care will offer residents reassurance: 'This model of housing and support will give people peace of mind about their futures.'

The development will also enable couples to remain living together, allowing caring by the other partner to continue and making extra care an option for people with early onset dementia .

Area programme manager for Guinness Developments Ltd Ryan Hosken said: 'With construction now well underway, we are looking forward to the successful completion of this project.

'Our aim is to provide residents with high quality, specifically designed new homes, alongside excellent communal facilities, allowing them to retain their independence and improve access to care and support services.'

A hairdresser's, laundry and guest suite, along with a restaurant and café, with a kitchen for freshly cooked meals, will be part of the development to provide residents and guests with a greater sense of independence

Each flat will be equipped with broadband and satellite TV and have its own bathroom, with larger bathrooms designed for people who require assistance with bathing.

A consulting room and three further adjoining rooms will also be available for a range of communal activities and clubs.
