OKEHAMPTON Primary School can continue to proudly fly the flag — after it retained its prestigious Eco School Green Flag.

The Eco-Schools programme is the largest sustainable schools programme in the world. Eco-Schools in England is run by Keep Britain Tidy, and has more than 12,100 schools participating.

The Eco-Schools programme is designed to involve as many people as possible, both inside and outside school, to raise their awareness of environmental issues and to improve the community spirit of an area, helping everyone to become involved in the decision-making of their local area.

The school started its eco journey back in 2008, when it was awarded its bronze award.

Since then they have progressed through the levels and first attained green flag status in 2011.

The award is the highest Eco School Award available, and requires a high standard of environmental work to attain. Following another two years of environmental projects at the school, they have retained their green flag status.

The eco-schools assessor told the school: 'Well done Okehampton Primary School. The children are committed and enthusiastic and clearly love their school. They thoroughly deserve to keep their Green Flag.

'This is an outstanding Eco-School which, through good leadership by the eco co-ordinator and backing from the head, endeavours to involve the whole community. Please keep up the hard work.'
