THE owners of the George Hotel in Hatherleigh, gutted by fire just before Christmas, are hoping the much loved pub will 'rise like a Phoenix' from the ashes.
The 15th century, Grade Two Listed building was devastated after fire spread throughout the building when the thatched roof caught alight.
However there is hope that the George will return, much to its original state if plans by its owners, Scottish and Newcastle Pub Enterprises come to fruition.
Louise Barnett, a spokeperson for S&NPE told the Times: 'S&N Pub Enterprises has worked in partnership with English Heritage and undertaken extensive surveys of the site.
'With regret, due to the severity of the damage caused by the fire, we have no other option than to make an application to de-List the building, which has now been made.
'However, in due course, it is our intention to submit a planning application which, if accepted, will allow us to completely rebuild The George Hotel.
'Although details are yet to be finalised, S&NPE intend the general footprint of the building to remain the same, with a visually similar exterior, in particular the frontage, courtyard and thatched roof remaining similar to before.'
However, the company says it would also recommend making alterations to the interior of the building which should improve the overall operations of the premises.
Louise Barnett added: 'We look forward to the day when the George Hotel will be at the heart of the community once more.'
