MARCHERS from West Devon joined some 700,000 people from across the UK in central London on Saturday to call for another chance to vote against Brexit.
A convoy of eight Devon for Europe coaches headed for the capital to join the People’s Vote march (marchers pictured above).
A spokesperson for the grassroots non-party political organisation said that countless others were packed into cars or caught trains or public coaches.
Among those taking part was Kay Caldwell from North Tawton, who said: ‘Representative democracy is about more than counting votes. It is about representing all views. To charge towards Brexit is to ignore the views of a huge number of people who are forced to take to the streets to be heard.’
Due to the huge number of people attending the march, the majority of Devon marchers got no further than Trafalgar Square.
However, their views were being represented on the stage in Parliament Square by Devon Conservative MP Sarah Wollaston who said Brexit was ‘the stuff of nightmares’.
Devon for Europe chair Alex Pilkington said: ‘People from across Devon made the effort to travel to the People’s Vote March for the Future to ensure there was a strong Devon voice demanding that democracy is upheld.
‘They booked places on coaches organised by Devon for Europe, they travelled by train and by car. We thank every one of them for helping make this march one of the biggest this country has ever seen.’
