AN OKEHAMPTON family, whose daughter suffers from leukaemia, held a successful golf day to help raise money for a charity close to their hearts.

Bea Holman-Brooks,12, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in January 2009. She spent three weeks in the Bristol Children's Hospital and was later transferred to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

A total of £15,500 was raised for Bea's Especially for You Fund at CLIC Sargent, which has continued to offer support to Bea and her family.

The event took place at Okehampton Golf Club, where a round of golf was played by 35 teams who took part.

Refreshments were enjoyed at the 9th hole, as well as a two-course meal afterwards. The winning team was Barclays Bank.

Bea's mother, Helen Holman, said: 'We were really pleased with how it went — it exceeded my expectations — so many people turned up.

'Luckily, the weather was kind to us and everyone had a great day.

'In the evening Bea told her story before presenting all the prizes and then her grand prize draw took place — the first prize was a week in Spain.

'All our prizes were donated, which meant all the money from the draw went to the charity.

'It really was a great day for everyone.'

The event also had a signed Manchester United football, which raised £200 and a signed Exeter Chiefs rugby ball, which Bea auctioned off for £70.

Helen Holman expressed thanks to everyone who helped support the event, including those who bought tickets, Okehampton Golf Club and local businesses.
