A CHARITY based in Bratton Clovelly that provides clean water to some of the poorest regions of Africa has recently completed its latest project.
Devon Aid Korogwe recently funded a new pipeline in Tanzania almost two miles long. The pipeline provides clean water to around 4,000 people over a large area.
Charity trustee Vivien England said: 'DAK is delighted with the workmanship and finish of their latest project. Villagers are equally delighted they no longer have to walk long distances to muddy holes to fetch polluted water for their families.
'So that villagers are responsible for the general care and maintenance of the source, two days of training have been given to a cross section of the community, including teenagers who are the future of the village welfare.
'Young children were taught how to wash their hands properly. Neighbouring villagers are travelling miles to come to buy from the strong supply.'
The charity works toward the relief of poverty, sickness and distress, and the advancement among people in Africa by providing clean water to areas that need it most. In particular the charity works in the Korogwe district and Tanga region of Tanzania.
Despite its successes, the charity's work is far from over. Vivien said: 'There are many villages still in great need of clean water. Dirty water holes and rivers are their main sources of water.
'Water-related diseases account for many hundreds of deaths each year. As well as the health risks, the tremendous amount of time and energy to travel and fetch the water could be otherwise used to generate an income from their farms or their handicraft.'
To ensure their important work continues, the club has a number of fundraising events throughout 2012.
The charity's annual wine and wisdom quiz night in Bratton Clovelly Parish Hall takes place on Friday March 23 from 7.30pm. Teams of six are invited to book by calling 01837 871310 or 01837 861829. Any individuals or incomplete teams are welcome to team up with others on the night.
The charity also has a runner representing it in the London Marathon. Marilyn Cooper from Inwardleigh will take part in the marathon, raising money for DAK.
Marilyn began running after taking part in the Ruby Run four years ago, and is now an experienced member of Okehampton Running Club, having taken part in many races, including the Bath Half Marathon and the Great Welsh Marathon.
If you would like to support Marilyn's effort, call 01837 53305 or 01837 871310.
