A CYCLE path in Okehampton will undergo a full revamp this autumn, after part of the path collapsed last month.

The Granite Way, which runs from Okehampton station to Lydford, was damaged when several wire cages filled with rocks burst and spilled, causing holes to appear in the cycleway surface between Meldon station and opposite the quarry.

Repair work was swiftly carried out by Devon County Council, which is responsible for the maintenance, so that the cycleway could be used during the last school holiday.

The path is now due to be closed for full repair work in the autumn, to enable a more permanent job to be done.

Voluntary liaison ranger for Sustainable Transport (Sustrans), Alan Finch, said underneath the track cannot be reached with machinery, so work would be done from the quarry, which will involve crossing the railway line.

He said: 'Most of the Granite Way is owned by Devon County Council, with smaller sections owned by Sustrans.

'A small team of voluntary rangers, led by myself, look after the minor maintenance such as cutting back brambles and litter picking.

'We are part of over 2,000 Sustrans volunteers nationwide.

'If the work is beyond us then we report it to Devon County Council, who also strim the verges once or twice each year.'

The Granite Way is part of National Cycle Way 27, Devon coast to coast, running from Ilfracombe to Plymouth.

Sustrans, which begun in 1975, is a national charity which encourages cycling, walking and the use of sustainable transport, such as buses and trains.
