BUSINESSES and local communities will benefit from a new project aiming to boost tourism in Ruby Country.
'Ride the Ruby Country' will improve the network of bridleways and multi-use trails courtesy of Devon County Council's 'Equestrian Devon' project made possible by substantial funding from the 'Invest in Devon' fund. Through these physical improvements, new opportunities for activity based and sustainable tourism will arise, linked to horse riding, cycling and walking.
Project co-ordinator Mark Betson aims to work closely with local communities and businesses across 20 Ruby Country parishes.
He said: 'The development of the equestrian and multi-use trails in Ruby Country is truly exciting. New social and economic opportunities are certain to arise, with visitors being able to enter Ruby Country from Dartmoor, the Tarka Trail and the north Cornwall coast.
'We want visitors to stay and experience the undiscovered rural charm and tranquillity of Ruby Country. We want Ruby Country to be a destination of choice for horse riders, cyclists and walkers both from the UK and abroad, with the improved recreational routes being a catalyst.'
Businesses will want to become involved with 'Ride the Ruby Country', as more visitors are attracted to this part of rural Devon. There has already been interest from people wanting advice on setting up horse B&B facilities and 'green'accommodation for visitors.
Mark added: 'The business network throughout Ruby Country will become more co-operative with local producers distributing their products directly to suppliers in a multitude of ways.
'I will encourage and support this network to develop by bringing together the many facets of the business community. Working with business and tourism partners I will ensure Ruby Country businesses receive the right help and advice to develop and sell their products to a wider audience and bring prosperity to this unique part of Devon.'
Local communities will benefit from a more accessible network of high quality trails. Improved access to multi-use trails will increase recreation opportunities for all, enticing people into the countryside to experience nature and the landscape while undertaking healthy exercise.
Led by Ruby Country Partnership, 'Ride the Ruby Country' has attracted grants from Greater Dartmoor LEAF, Leader 4 Torridge and North Devon, incorporating funding from the EU, DEFRA, SWRDA and LEADER. Devon County Council, Torridge District Council and West Devon Borough Council have also pledged financial support.
