THE discovery of the remains of a Roman road will be the focus of an Okement Rivers Improvement Group meeting open to the public on April 9.

Devon County Council archivist Bill Horner will visit the group to discuss the discovery of remains of a Roman road near Chicacott Road on the east of town. The road linked to a fort which stood on land north of the Abbey Rise estate.

The fort, fortlet and associated enclosures are protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Archaeologists have been studying the road, and it is currently seen to be of national significance too. Mr Horner's talk will look at the find, and also look at Roman life in the area.

The meeting will act as the group's annual meeting, but it is open to members of the public curious to find out more about the remains. The meeting takes place in the Ockment Centre on April 9 at 7pm. There will be tea, coffee and refreshments.
