AN unusual Celtic illumination workshop will take place at Castle Drogo on May 24, run by Judith Richardson-Dawes.
Judith took medieval studies at Exeter University as part of her English and Fine Arts degree and her workshops, teaching rare skills and ancient technologies for The National Trust, proved to be a great success.
From initially teaching medieval illumination, Judith now teaches both Celtic and Anglo Saxon art workshops as well.
'It is vitally important to keep these ancient skills alive,' said Judith. 'They are rarely taught nowadays, but it would be a terrible thing if they were lost. They are a part of our cultural heritage.'
In her current workshop, 'Lines Traced by Angels' Judith will look at the Celtic artwork found in The Book of Kells, described as 'so fine that it must be the work not of men but of angels!
Participants will create a unique design inspired by The Book of Kells and add a greeting in the Celtic Uncial Script, before illuminating their work with Holbein gold.
