SIXTH Form pupils from Shebbear College will be travelling to Uganda to take part in an expedition working with a variety of charities and schools in the Kampala area this July.
To take part the pupils had to demonstrate a commitment to helping their own local community, the environment and ethical issues over the past few years. Since their selection they have been busy fundraising, organising events such as wine and wisdoms — the next is on March 26 at the college — carwashes, cake sales and some of the more adventurous participants have even completed sponsored Ski Dives.
As part of the challenge they had to raise the money to go on the expedition as well as money for the charities that Shebbear has links with.
Over the course of sixteen days in Uganda, the students will visit a number of different schools, teaching lessons based upon the idea of cultural exchange. On arrival a proportion of the money raised will be spent in local stores on books and paper for the schools. The pupils will also spend days with a number of Ugandan charities looking at the work these organisations do.
