TWO artists who use recycled materials to create their work are currently holding a joint exhibition at The Wharf in Tavistock.

Textile artist Jackie Gale, who won best up and coming artist 2015 in May from the Fine Art Trade Guild, and wood sculptor Andre Daniel, will be showcasing their work until January 6.

Jackie was selected for the award by the Fine Art Trade Guild Committee together with public votes. As the first textile artist to win the award she feels really honoured.

‘I got into textile art relatively recently although I have always been creative,’ said Jackie. ‘I was a nurse for 20 years and had a complete change of career. I am really lucky to have gained quite a large following in a short space of time.

‘I just love creating scenes in this unique style and I think people like it because they feel they can touch it and the detail.’

Jackie uses vintage fabrics and recycled materials such as old maps, twine, hardware, clock pieces, in fact anything that suits the image.

This will be the first time she has exhibited her work in Tavistock — entitled ‘The Dartmoor Collection’ scenes on display include the wild rugged landscapes, Jail Ale and the Royal Oak at Meavy.

Former furniture maker and boatbuilder Andre Daniel uses fallen timbers to create moth structures and describes his work as ‘a celebration of nature’

Jackie said: ‘Our work really complements each other’s. We both use recycled materials in a unique way and we actually used to share a workshop together.

Andre also has an interesting story to tell because he travelled around the world for 20 years before settling back in the Plymouth area where he is from originally. He now lives in the woods in the middle of nowhere, creating his work, from things he finds.

Jackie, who once lived in Whitchurch but now lives in the South Hams, and Andre, will be holding a ‘meet the artist’ day on Saturday (December 5) between 10am and 5pm. There will be mulled wine in the afternoon and other Christmas treats.
