THE standard of talent expected at the final of this year's Battle of the Bands is a 'mouth-watering' concept for the competition's organiser, Richard Appleby.
The second heat last Thursday saw people fill the Charter Hall to watch eight acts perform for 20 minutes to showcase their talents for the judges.
Richard said the second heat was another 'fantastic' night with a variety of acts proving they had what it takes, playing their own style of music.
'The final is a mouth-watering prospect as they are all so talented and it is exciting because of the variety of these bands.
'But not only that — we can now confirm that our guest band at the final will be the Beatlez, who are a world-class tribute act from Liverpool.
'We wanted something special for the final. This band must be good, as Oasis have booked them to play at their private party.'
After the second heat Richard said: 'The bands there said how well the event went, how well they were supported and how impressed they were at what Okehampton has to offer. We all had a fantastic time.'
The first act performing on the night was acoustic singer/songwriter Daniel Kemish from Tavistock and second on were surf/rock party band the Yum Yums from Barnstaple.
Next saw the Mo7s, from Hartland, entertain the audience with their original sound. They were followed by Dmitri from Beaworthy, who sang the T-Rex song 'I Love to Boogie' all in Russian and changed the chorus to 'I love to boogie on a Thursday' — which went down well with the judges.
Underclass Strife from Beaford were on next with their retro image and Indie Mod music, playing Rickenbacker guitars.
In first place was Underclass Strife and second were the Yum Yums. Both bands will go through to the final on Saturday, August 9 and will join singer/songwriter Tom Guest and band Fieldmarshall Gorsefinger.
Richard said: 'Two more bands will be selected this Thursday to go into the final.'
Running alongside the main battle is the photo competition which is in its first year. People are invited to take pictures that capture the excitement and atmosphere of this year's Battle of the Bands. Photos should be sent to Richard at [email protected]">[email protected]
Richard added that any local charities who would like a stall at the final should contact him on 01837 811172.
The final heat will be held at the Charter Hall tonight (Thursday) at 6.30pm. Hot food and a bar will be available.
