A MAJOR awards evening took place at Okehampton College in recognition of the students' outstanding achievements.

The evening, held in the college's Octagon Theatre, was packed out with proud parents, teachers and students. The awards were presented to students who achieved their GCSE and A Level for key stage four. It was also recognition for the students who have succeeded in various different capacities— including sports. The evening recognised the efforts of the students academically and those who have overcome difficulties.

The former chair of governors for Okehampton College John Stevens said: 'I was profoundly moved by what the young people at the college have achieved at a time where you hear so much bad press about young people today causing problems.

'It is so refreshing to hear that the students have overcome difficulties and achieved such outstanding success.'

Former college student Emily Winter, aged 18, was over the moon with her success. She said: 'I was so pleased with my results. I worked extremely hard to get them and I am very happy.'

Emily, who is currently studying history at Exeter University, earned four 'As' in German, history, maths and English and was presented with an award for all four subjects, including a general A level award.

She said: 'I didn't actually know what subjects I wanted to study so I just chose the ones that I enjoyed. The awards mean a lot to me and my family.'

Emily's father, Dr Michael Winter, said: 'We are very proud of Emily for all her hard work. We are also extremely pleased with Okehampton College and very grateful for all the support from the staff and teachers. The college really is a credit to the area.'

Okehampton College has excelled academically this year. The college came in the top 20 percentile for the high performance status and has seen two students come in the top ten out of thousands of students worldwide for GCSE drama. The college is continuing to grow with plans for a new training centre getting underway. The centre is set to offer students the opportunity to study Btechs and diplomas as well as allowing them to continue their studies at the college of their choice.
