PLAYERS, sponsors and raffle prizes are being sought for a charity golf day being planned at Okehampton Golf Club.
The golf day on Friday, April 4 is being planned to kick start a Parkinson's Disease support group in Okehampton. The club's ladies' captain Val Dodsworth is organising the event.
Val's husband Sam suffers with the disease, and is hopeful that the creation of a support group in Okehampton will help Parkinson's sufferers and their families cope with the disease. Some of the money raised will be given to the Tavistock support group to expand their efforts.
She said: 'Sam has suffered with Parkinsons for the last 20 years and he now is unable to walk or speak without a great effort. Whilst medication can help, this chronic disease can be very isolating and sufferers and their carers can benefit hugely from support from local groups and also specialised physiotherapy.
'Sam and I currently travel the twenty or so miles to Tavistock which has a terrific support group run by volunteers which offers advice, social events and an exercise group twice a month to about 40 members and their carers. This is a lifeline for us on difficult days.
'There are moves to start a similar group in Okehampton, which I'm sure will be hugely welcomed by local people affected by this destructive disease.'
Businesses can sponsor a hole for £40, or become the main sponsor for the whole day. Being the day's main sponsor includes a free round of golf for four people at the club.
Alternatively, you can donate raffle prizes, money, or enter a team of four players for the day. If you feel you can support Val and her fundraising efforts, call her on 01837 849045 or e-mail [email protected]">[email protected]
