THE annual Sticklepath Tipteers Mummers Play received a warm reception when it took place at two different venues on New Year's Day.

The event was watched by more than 100 people and performed in front of the Seven Stars Inn in South Tawton and later at the King's Arms in South Zeal.

It was the final performance for one Sticklepath resident, Morris Pritchard, who is set to retire after having played the part of the noble captain for many years.

Organiser of the event Bill Murray said: 'The weather was perfect, with clear skies and sunshine.

'In previous years we have often had rain, which keeps the crowds away and also makes it uncomfortable for the players, especially those who have to lie down when they are killed off as the performance proceeds.'

This year's cameo role was performed by Richard Tancock, whose part of the Teign Soldier was written into the play specially for him, and saw him wear a tin suit fabricated from a very large tin of John West and a magnificent stuffed salmon on his head.

As always, Father Christmas was performed by Morris Elsworth and Nick Parker-Groom again impressed the audience as Saint George the Briton Oh!

Mr Murray expressed thanks to all the supporters who turned up and for giving generously towards the cost of the insurance.

The next Tipteers Mummers play will be on St George's Day, Friday, April 23, at 7pm at the King's Arms in South Zeal.
