South West Peninsula League Division One East
Exmouth Town 4
Okehampton Argyle 1
EXMOUTH just about deserved this victory but the scoreline flattered them. The Okes left regular Corey Burns on the bench in favour of Chris Wills who had just returned from holiday and another surprise was that Steve Madge, man of the match only two weeks ago, also started on the bench.
The first half mostly belonged to Exmouth. They tackled hard and fast in midfield and stopped Argyle settling on the ball and deservedly took the lead on ten minutes.
A cross into the Argyle box saw a shot from close in pushed away by Harry Geering, but somehow Exmouth defender Mark Simic managed to force home the loose ball.
The Okes kept competing in a game of a very high standard with a tremendous battle going on in midfield.
Their best first half spell was the ten minutes before half-time when they began to string some good passing movements together.
They came close when Luke Alden was put through by Adam Mortimer, only to see his shot well saved by Allen in the home goal.
The midfield battle continued into the second half but it looked all over for Okehampton when Exmouth doubled their advantage on 50 minutes.
A long shot broke loose off an Okes defender and Dave O'Connor was on hand to slot home. But Argyle struck back immediately as Luke Alden beat two defenders in the Exmouth box only to be brought down.
Up stepped Matt Mortimer to crash home the penalty.
The Okes now had their best period of the game and dominated for the next 25 minutes. They did everything except score as they put constant pressure on the home defence. The nearest they got was when Luke Alden beat three men before shooting against the post.
On 77 minutes, they were caught on the break when Dave O'Connor made the game safe for Exmouth with a superb goal and then two minutes later, Kyle Basset fired home an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box to complete an unhappy night for Okehampton.
Harry Geering made some great saves in the Okes goal and the whole team worked hard but Exmouth were slightly the better side on the night.
