THE mayor of Okehampton, the Rev Mike Davies, fellow councillor Kay Bickley and other plucky volunteers are ready to go 'over the top' to show their support for Room 13.

On Saturday, December 8, they will be abseiling down the tower of St James' Church in Okehampton to raise funds to give support to young people in the area, aged between 13 and 19.

Cllr Bickley joked: 'I must admit that I am probably taken leave of my senses but "hey ho" it is in a good cause. Let's hope the ropes hold out or there will be a nasty mess on the floor!'

The Rev Cllr Mike Davies was equally looking forward to the adventure.

'I was recently asked by the Heartlands Forum if the mayor would ever consider making more use of the ancient mayoral chapel of St James' — I don't think abseiling down the side was quite what they meant!'

The sponsored abseil takes place between 11am and 4pm and there will be food on sale at Room 13 with jacket potatoes and hot dogs.
